(posted a couple days late due to bad service)

We flew up to Cairns which is in northern Australia. We were completely wowed by the fact that the coastline is up against a rain forest. We picked up our Campervan the next day and officially began the road trip down the coast of Queensland. Will is carrying the team with the driving so far. He was brave enough to try left side driving first. I’m sure my time will come but right now I’m using blogging as an excuse to be in the passenger seat!

As we began to drive, Will said it reminded him a lot of an area of Vietnam he visited a couple years ago. The rainforest is all around with sugar cane and banana trees growing on either side of the road.

Our first stop was at Etty Bay which is a beach hidden past some dense forest. Etty Bay is famous for Cassowary sightings. It is safe to say we thought a cassowary would just look like a turkey, but Australian wildlife is no joke and it turns out it is a massive bird that is very aggressive. We kept a safe distance but we’re very impressed by the size of this thing.

Kept driving down the coast and saw a couple more Cassowaries when we took scenic routes. Stopped at a local grocery store to stock the van up with food and then found a local campsite to park for the night. We cooked spaghetti and meatballs in our little kitchen (smoke alarm might have gone off a couple of times) and then transformed our table into a bed. Had a nice little rainstorm lull us to sleep!

Googled cassowary and the first article was “why the cassowary is the worlds most dangerous bird” - don’t bring one home!

Never heard of a cassowary. Thanks for the education! LOVE the camper. Y'all did it well!
